Part 10 ‘Subfloor framing and floor’

Now that the chassis is near enough to finished a start is made on constructing the subfloor framing and the floor itself. I was fortunate to find copies of the original body building plans of these Australian #9 Gun Tractors on Keith Webb’s excellent web site www.oldcmp.net/ and these helped immensely by giving me the [...]

part 09 ‘The Chassis finish and cab’

The chassis is about 95% finished at this stage and this part of the build will all but finish the chassis and will start construction of the body. A lot of work done to this stage will not be seen once the finished model is mounted on a base.
Why do all that work when you [...]

part 08 ‘The steering & Shock absorbors’

I was going to use a steering box from the Italeri 15cwt Chev kit but after viewing photos of the real thing decided to make a new steering box and column to suit my Ford as the mounting and looks of the box were different.

This is a steering box on a Cab 12 CMP but [...]

part 07 ’spring detailing’

I raided the spares box once again for 4 plates that the spring ‘U’ bolts attach to when the axles are fitted to the springs. The Ford CMP has a different method of placing the plates between the front and rear axles. On the rear the plates sit on top of the spring while on [...]

part 06 ‘the winch & transfer case’

First I must correct a fault with the tow bar setup in Part 05 that I was made aware of after publishing. There was only one return roller on the left hand side for the winch, so the right hand side one had to be removed from the model.

the right hand roller removed
A copy of the winch [...]

Part 05 ‘the tow bar set up’

The above photo (courtesy of Keith Webb at http://www.oldcmp.net/) shows the tow setup and associated winch cable rollers which was fitted to the CMP Ford #9 Gun tractors. It is different to the Canadian and British Gun Tractors so kit parts from the spares box could not be used for the roller setup.
The bar spring with [...]

Part 04A ‘front spring repairs’

As was said in part 04 ’springs’ I miscalculated the rear mounting on the front springs and it meant the front axle would not sit as it should. This meant that I had to redo the front spring masters and remould the front springs.
While this was happening I cut and modified the resin set I had [...]

Part 04 ‘the springs’

I always start my springs by getting a thin piece of brass strip and using round jaw pliers twisting each end to form the spring bush parts at the end of the (usually) top leaf. I normally roll this arround a thin brass rod at the same time. This is a bit hit and miss [...]

Part 03 ‘the chassis’

I built a 60cwt (3 ton) CMP cab 12 Ford with a 158 inch wheel base (CMP F60L) some time ago and with the Ford CMP’s the chassis, apart from new location holes for the body is the same as the later #13 cab models. At this time I took measurements of the chassis and [...]

Part 02 ‘the parts’

Having decided to build this Australian Ford #9 Gun tractor some time ago and having collected information from a number of sources including private and public web sites I also, over time, made masters & took moulds of them to reproduce these parts in resin.

Most were common items between models such as wheels.
